MESSAGE TO BRITISH P.O.W. IN JAPANESE HANDS

THE COMMITTEE referred to a telegram from Admiral Mountbatten giving the text of a message which he proposed to drop on British P.0.W. camps in Japanese occupied territory.

THE COMMITTEE endorsed the action which Admiral Mountbatten proposed to take.

SIR ANDREW CUNNINGHAM said that Admiral Fraser had not yet received instructions on the policy he was to adopt for the handling of British Commonwealth prisoners of war on liberation.

THE COMMITTEE:

(a)

Instructed the Secretary to reply

to Admiral Mountbatten's telegram endorsing the action he proposed to take and the terms of the leaflet;

(b) Invited the Admiralty, in consultation

with the War Office, to draft and circulate the necessary instructions to Admiral Fraser regarding the liberation of British Commonwealth prisoners of war.
